A mixed-use residential destination is accelerating a resurgence in Springfield, Mass.’s Court Square neighborhood and setting the stage for the city’s long-term economic growth.

This year, the Landmarks Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Awards are honoring rehabilitation and adaptive reuse projects in Alto Pass, Carterville, Chicago, Elgin, Rockford and Woodstock.

Preserve Rhode Island announced the 10 recipients of the 2024 Rhody Awards for Historic Preservation. The architecture and historic preservation firm Page & Turnbull is at the forefront of this unprecedented movement as the architect behind the preservation and rehabilitation of Fresno, Calif.’s historic rail station for use as the first component of the intermodal high-speed rail commuter station. 

Concealed beneath a lay-in ceiling, the building's hallmark sawtooth structure remained hidden from view. This architectural feature, characterized by its series of upward-facing roof sections resembling the teeth of a saw blade, held the potential to transform the space into something truly remarkable.

Rehabbing buildings with energy conservation in mind can be a massive undertaking, requiring a holistic exterior and interior approach to decrease buildings’ carbon emissions and energy consumption while minimizing disruption to current occupants. A deep energy retrofit is achieved when renovation activities reduce a building’s site energy usage by at least 40 percent.
