IIDA and the IIDA Foundation announced Jezarely Miguel, Ind. IIDA, Founder and Designer of Matiz, as the recipient of the 2024 Anna Hernandez/Luna Textiles Award. This annual award honors a woman business owner making valuable contributions to the design industry.

“Jezarely blends her cultural roots through collaboration and community impact to bring people together through innovation and the power of design.” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “This blend embodies the significance of Anna Hernandez’s dream of seeing women thrive in leadership, ingenuity, and steadfast commitment to storytelling in the industry.”

Miguel embarked on her design journey in 2016 at a Portland-based furniture dealership, immersing herself in the intricacies of corporate office projects of varying scales. Her passion and talent soon led her to Hennebery Eddy Architects in 2018, an Architecture and Design Firm in Portland, Oregon. There, she contributed her creative vision to numerous projects, including the expansive Concourse E Extension at the Portland International Airport.

In 2021, after three years at Hennebery Eddy Architects, Miguel charted a new course, founding Matiz. Her goal with creating Matiz, was to curate textile collections inspired with cultural narratives and collaborating intimately with a team of skilled Oaxacan artisans. Her designs not only showcase her heritage but also resonate deeply with audiences, establishing profound connections with the public, trade professionals, designers, and showrooms alike.

This year’s entries were reviewed by a committee of interior design industry professionals: Kimball International Vice President, A&D Michelle Boolton, Ind. IIDA; Gensler Design Director Bill Bouchey, FIIDA; Stantec Associate, Interior Design Jill Dexter, IIDA; FXCollaborative Architects LLP Managing Partner Guy Geier, FIIDA, FAIA; Carol Jones, FIIDA, Emeritus IIDA (retired, Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning); and Eileen Jones, FIIDA (retired, Perkins&Will).

Miguel will be honored during the 2024 IIDA Annual Meeting on June 9 at VenueSIX10 in Chicago. She will also receive $5,000 from the IIDA Foundation.
