Global architecture and design firm Perkins Eastman announced that John Shoesmith, AIA, EDAC, LEED AP, has joined as principal in its Seattle studio and is now a part of the firm’s international senior living practice. With more than 30 years of experience, Shoesmith’s work involves the full continuum of senior living including active adult, life plan communities, assisted living, long-term care environments, and intentional inter-generational communities.

John became interested in design for aging after witnessing his grandmother’s struggle with dementia. His observations about how the environment could be both an asset and an obstacle in her care compelled him to dedicate his career to elevating the standard in design for aging and memory care. His passion remains in creating high quality memory care environments that allow residents to continue to be active, successful,and have a sense of purpose. His advocacy and participation with nonprofit organizations and working groups, including the Facilities Guideline Institute, have helped establish vital policy and recommendations at the industry-wide level for the planning, design, and construction of senior living and healthcare facilities.

Shoesmith will be based in Perkins Eastman’s growing Seattle studio and will collaborate with clients on projects nationwide.
