FORM innovations INC’s sustainable building envelope is set to become one of the solutions chosen from an international challenge to rebuild fire ravaged Kanaka Bar. The goal was to find the most climate resilient and sustainable solutions available.
Last June the entire country was shocked when in a matter of hours the town of Lytton, BC burned to the ground. That was the beginning of severe climate events for the region, followed by massive rain, flooding, and extreme cold. The leadership of Kanaka Bar Indian Band took action, and initiated an innovative challenge to help build back better. Led by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), a collaborative team of participants from Okanagan College, Foresight Canada, and Seko Construction sought to create foundational options for rebuilding in the Lytton region.
The challenge was open to innovative, climate resilient building solutions, whether Canadian or international, that met project parameters. All building materials and systems must meet or exceed BC Energy Step Code- Step 5. Pilot structures are to be built, with ongoing environmental, energy and resilience testing completed by SAIT.
FORM innovations highly insulated PCF (polyurethane concrete form) has been chosen as one of four building envelope solutions, and is very appreciative to be able to support this important project. The importance is clear as we continue to experience severe climate events in our country.
“We live in buildings that were designed for the weather of yesterday. In extreme weather events, what is the alternative? We are determined to build back better. We need to make sure what we build is climate resilient. ” Chief Patrick Michell – Kanaka Bar Band
We are excited our high quality PolarBlock will be able to help solve this community’s problems by providing a resilient, simple to construct option for buildings.
