The Steel Deck Institute (SDI) has published updates to the "Roof Deck Design Manual, 2nd Edition" and the "Floor Deck Design Manual, 2nd Edition." These new editions have been updated to comply with the 2018 International Building Code and are based on the standards referenced in the code.
The first and second editions of both manuals were authored by SDI Technical Director, Thomas Sputo, Ph.D., P.E., S.E.
The "Roof Deck Design Manual, 2nd Edition" has been updated to the ANSI/SDI RD-2017 “Standard for Steel Roof Deck” and AISI S100-16, North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, 2016 Edition. The manual includes design tables for steel roof deck including section properties, allowable construction spans, and flexural and shear resistance for floor deck.
With most manufacturers now using steel with a minimum specified yield stress of 40 ksi, the SDI updated all section properties, design tables, and other examples to reflect the higher steel strength. The updated manual also includes a new design example for mechanically attached roof membranes and a new design table for moving concentrated loads on steel roof deck.
The "Floor Deck Design Manual, 2nd Edition" has been updated to the ANSI/SDI C-2017 “Standard for Composite Steel Floor Deck-Slabs,” ANSI/SDI NC-2017 “Standard for Non-Composite Steel Floor Deck,” and AISI S100-16, North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, 2016 Edition.
The manual includes design tables for composite and non-composite steel floor deck which outline section properties, allowable construction spans, and flexural and shear resistance of composite floor deck. The updated manual also includes new tables for post loads, moving concentrated loads, and scissor lifts on steel floor deck-slabs.
“The updates reinforce the importance of using steel in construction and the benefits that it provides,” said SDI Managing Director Robert Paul.
Both manuals are available for purchase as a PDF download or hard copy from the SDI website at www.sdi.org.
