Duncan Griffin, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, has been promoted to managing principal of HDR’s Seattle architecture studio. With HDR since May 2016, he was previously a sustainability principal.

Griffin’s responsibilities include growing the Seattle architecture practice, with an emphasis on areas such as Triple Net Zero (energy, water, waste) and even Net Positive environments, where buildings create more energy than they consume, for HDR’s complex civic, healthcare and science/education buildings. The Seattle practice will look to employ strategies such as regenerative design approaches to improve the life and productivity of building occupants, while addressing the need to serve long-term community viability.

Known as one of the healthcare industry’s most respected leaders, Griffin champions the triple bottom line of equity, economy and environment. He is a licensed architect and a Lean-certified practitioner with 25 years of experience, recently leading sustainable design efforts for HDR projects including the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Marina Del Ray Hospital for Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles and Intermountain Healthcare’s Spanish Fork Hospital in Utah, among others. In the past, he collaborated with the Integrated Design Lab and Solarc Energy Group in Seattle to research ideal solutions for energy reduction in hospitals. The results were published in a study that helps healthcare facilities meet the Architecture 2030 challenge by reducing energy use to 100 kBtu/SF year.

Griffin is a frequent presenter, including at the national conferences for AIA, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering, Greenbuild and CleanMed. He is also a committed urban environmentalist who organizes and leads volunteer efforts supporting local non-profits, with the most recent event being Green Seattle Day 2017.

“Duncan’s passion, dedication and drive to create environments that benefit the public and enhance the environment match up well with our goals for the Seattle studio,” said Todd Tierney, AIA, architecture regional director/ senior vice president. “His ability to deliver high-performance environments that maximize health, comfort and well-being will be a game-changer for our clients, and I look forward to partnering with Duncan and Design Principal Thomas Knittel, AIA, LEED BD+C, NCARB, on this studio’s transformation.”
