DENVER — Johns Manville (JM) was honored with a Colorado Environmental Leadership Award by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in cooperation with the Pollution Prevention Advisory Board and the Colorado Environmental Partnership. The Colorado Environmental Leadership Awards recognize local organizations for voluntarily going beyond compliance with state and federal regulations and for their commitment to environmental responsibility.
JM was presented with a Gold Leader designation due to its rigorous sustainability strategy, as evidenced by its commitment to sourcing renewable and non-renewable raw materials in the most environmentally efficient way possible; its pledge to reducing carbon footprint and waste; and its policies on employee health and safety.
Dr. Tim Swales, vice president of corporate research and development and chief sustainability officer for Johns Manville, said the company has been working diligently to achieve its sustainability goals and is proud to earn the Gold Leader designation.
“Our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System was audited and approved by a third-party registrar earlier this year, and that was a significant achievement within our sustainability strategy,” said Dr. Swales. “We firmly believe in a sustainable approach to doing business, and our commitment doesn’t stop there. Our strategic imperatives require us to establish and monitor goals in key areas such as energy use, waste reduction, and air emissions, and it’s something we’ll be doing on an ongoing basis.”
More than 170 companies were recognized for their outstanding environmental achievements at the 13th annual event, which took place at the Sewell Grand Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s program recognized 19 new Gold Leader companies for a total of 81 current Gold Leader organizations. In addition, there are currently 38 companies designated as Silver Partner organizations and 14 companies designated as Bronze Achiever organizations.
The Colorado Environmental Leadership Program is a statewide environmental recognition and reward program administered by the Department of Public Health and Environment’s Office of Environmental Integration and Sustainability. The program is open to all Colorado businesses, industries, offices, educational institutions, municipalities, government agencies, communities, nonprofits and other organizations.
